Hey everyone. I finally managed to put this page together. I wanted a quiet place to jot down my thoughts without dealing with the constant noise of social media feeds.
If you somehow stumbled onto this page, you probably know me from Bridge the Gap, the English learning group I started a while back. If not, nice to meet you!
A couple of years ago, I kept running into the exact same situation. So many folks around me really wanted to improve their spoken English, but they were either terrified of sounding silly or they just couldn't afford those crazy expensive private tutors. I was just helping out a few friends at a local coffee shop on weekends. We'd grab some drinks, pick a random topic, and just talk. No boring textbooks, no strict grammar drills, just regular, messy conversation.
Word got around pretty fast. Before I knew it, our tiny table of four turned into twenty people taking over half the cafe every Saturday. That was the moment I realized we actually had something pretty special going on.
Fast forward to today, and Bridge the Gap is a full-fledged non-profit organization. I still pinch myself sometimes knowing I get to lead this amazing crew. We have a solid team of volunteers who host these casual language exchanges every single week, both in person and online.
We work really hard to keep everything completely free because money shouldn't be what stops you from connecting with the rest of the world. Watching someone who used to stutter nervously through a basic introduction confidently debate their favorite movies a few months later is honestly the best feeling.
I'll be using this space to post random updates about what the group is up to. I might drop some resources that our members find helpful, or just vent a bit about the behind-the-scenes chaos of running a grassroots group. I'm also planning to share some tips on how to stop translating in your head, which seems to be everyone's biggest hurdle right now.
Anyway, I should probably get back to organizing the volunteer schedule for next week's meetup. Thanks for stopping by, and I'll try to write again when I have a bit of downtime.
